Mishuna MacDonald

Bethune Oak Park Elementary

5th Grade Science and Social Studies

  1. How long have you been teaching?

I have been passionately teaching for 10 years.

  1. What inspired you to pursue a career in education?

The reason I went into the field of education are because of the following reasons:

    - A love of learning: I have a deep passion for knowledge and enjoy sharing that enthusiasm with others.

    - A desire to make a difference: I often feel a strong calling to positively impact the lives of young people and help them reach their full potential.

    - A sense of purpose: I have the opportunity to guide and support students' growth, which can be incredibly fulfilling and meaningful.

    - Inspiration from personal experiences: My mother was an influential teacher who inspired me to pursue a career in education. She would get us dressed, feed us breakfast, and then drive one hour to teach kindergarten students for years.

  1. What is your favorite thing about teaching or your biggest success story?

    - Seeing students grow and succeed: One of the most fulfilling aspects of teaching is witnessing students develop their knowledge, skills, and confidence.

    - Making a positive impact on the community: I often feel a sense of purpose in shaping the future by helping students become responsible and engaged citizens.

    - Building strong relationships with students and colleagues: The connections formed with students and fellow educators can be deeply rewarding and lasting. I had a success story with a student that struggled with behavior. We worked together throughout the year to help with having a growth mindset. Over the summer, my principal contacted me to let me know that this student went from unsatisfactory on leap testing to basic. I was so proud of him!

  1. What challenges do you face in the classroom?

The challenges we face in the classroom are educating students that deal with multiple levels of trauma and them lacking in getting true and consistent help they need at home.

  1. What is something that every student should know about teachers?

Every student should know that we think about them when we leave the school. Most teachers love the students that they educate like they are our own kids.

  1. What advice would you impart to a new teacher or someone who wants to become a teacher?

My advice to awesome teachers is as follows:

    - Build strong relationships: Connect with your students on a personal level and create a positive and supportive classroom environment.

    - Be organized and prepared: Effective planning and preparation are essential for successful teaching.

    - Continuously learn and grow: Stay up-to-date with educational trends, research, and best practices.

    - Embrace diversity and inclusivity: Create a classroom where all students feel valued and respected.

    - Be patient and persistent: Teaching can be challenging, but remember that progress takes time. Take time to breathe, do self-care, and trust God to anoint you for this calling to teach.

  1. What do you love to do when you're not teaching?

The things that I like to do when I am not teaching are spend time with my family and friends, watch a movie, pray, line dance, and attend football games!
