How long have you been teaching?
16 years
What inspired you to pursue a career in education?
There was a preschool program in my high school that prepared students to work in entry-level positions at daycares. Upon graduation from high school, I received my childhood development associate credential as well as some college credits to pursue an associate degree in early childhood education, and I thought to myself, why stop there? I pursued a bachelor's level teaching degree while working at the day care setting full time because I wanted to have my own classroom in the future.
What is your favorite thing about teaching or your biggest success story?
My favorite thing about teaching is when the students accidentally call you "mom." I love to see their little light bulbs spark with imagination and curiosity during science labs/ lessons. I also love to see the growth my students make during the year. My biggest success story is overcoming the odds as a teacher and always continuing to adapt and learn. During Covid, I was the virtual teacher. I have never done anything like that before in my career. That was something that I had to learn on the spot and still deliver engaging lessons to my then-first-grade students. It was not easy, but I managed to overcome those obstacles and grew to actually like online teaching. Maybe in the future I will consider teaching virtually at some point.
What challenges do you face in the classroom?
Challenges include disruptive student behavior, lack of parental support, and funding for resources.
How do Gallopade products or Gallopade Curriculum help you in the classroom?
I am currently teaching 4th grade where the curriculum includes a major focus on the state of Florida. The Gallopade Curriculum supplemental resources will make a difference in my classroom by enhancing the curriculum and providing more hands on learning opportunities for the students to really grasp some of the more abstract concepts.
What is something that every student should know about teachers?
That we are in a profession to serve them. We are selfless and we are here for them. We are their biggest advocators. Even though we may place high expectations or can be strict at times, and they may not always like the rules, we love them all and just want for them to succeed to their fullest potential.
What advice would you impart to a new teacher or someone who wants to become a teacher?
Make sure you are getting into the profession because you truly love children. There will be times when you are going to get kicked down and oftentimes give selflessly to a profession that may not always have your back. Make sure you set strict boundaries and separate work from your private life. Put your mental health first and advocate for yourself.
What do you love to do when you're not teaching?
When I am not teaching, I like to unwind by going to the beach. Since I live in sunny south Florida, I have the opportunity to go to the beach often and I just love to surround myself by nature. I am a huge bookworm and an avid reader. Additionally, traveling and exploring new places also brings me joy.
