Adam Moore
Meadowview Middle School
7th Grade Social Studies Teacher
1. How long have you been teaching?
I have been teaching for 7 years.
2. What inspired you to pursue a career in education?
My mother was also a teacher, and not only did she teach students the content, but she was a mother to many kids who did not have the same opportunities that I had. She inspired me to become a teacher, and I had many excellent teachers and coaches who challenged me to be the best that I could be. I also saw that these people would pour their hearts and souls into all of their students. Plus, I love history and helping people realize their potential.
3. What is your favorite thing about teaching or your biggest success story?
I love working with my students who come to me with little knowledge about World History, and when they leave, they know so much more about the world and how history impacts our modern world. Not only do I want my students to be successful in my classroom, I want them to be successful in any endeavor they pursue. When students learn how to use the historical method and ask their own questions and become inquisitive about people from the past, that’s success. Personally, as a teacher, I have found huge success in shifting my mindset from teaching to student learning. As a facilitator of learning, I want to guide students to their own understanding of the content instead of just giving them the answer in a lecture format.
4. What challenges do you face in the classroom?
I believe there are some universal challenges that teachers face in the classroom. In a digital age, we are competing for the attention of our students. Technology can be a blessing and a curse. Another challenge is teaching a lesson to 25-30 students who are on different learning levels and have various learning styles and needs. However, it does keep me thinking about different ways to implement the content to my students.
5. How do Gallopade products or Gallopade Curriculum help you in the classroom?
I use Gallopade every single day in my classroom. The Gallopade Curriculum aligns with our 7th grade TN State Standards. Our book is in full color, has chunked readings, and activities that challenge my students to think and not just simply answer the question. Gallopade also has an online toolbox that has plenty of extra resources and materials to remediate or enrich student learning.
6. What is something that every student should know about teachers?
Sometimes students forget that teachers are people as well. We make mistakes and have emotions just like students do. I also hope that students realize that teachers work hard to prepare lessons for them, and we want to see them learn and be successful!
7. What advice would you impart to a new teacher or someone who wants to become a teacher?
“Talk less and smile more…Don't let them know what you're against or what you're for.”
Let your students know that you care about them, build relationships with them, and greet them at the door! Professionally, invest in the PLC process! I worked with my colleagues to analyze student work. Learn how to unpack the standard and design learning targets that lead to student mastery. Through this process, we were able to analyze student work to determine mastery and non-mastery.
8. What do you love to do when you're not teaching?
I enjoy spending time with my wife of 6 years and our 3-year-old daughter, Adley. I enjoy watching football, racing, reading, and cooking. My wife and I enjoy attending concerts, visiting historical sites, and chasing our daughter!
